Plan your journey

Decide how much of the road you want to experience.

There is no single correct via71 itinerary. The route works as a scenic day journey, an overnight stop or a slower pre-Kruger road trip.

Simple starting patterns

Choose the rhythm, then build around it.

One day

The through journey

  • Start west of the escarpment
  • Pause in the mountain corridor
  • Break in or around Tzaneen
  • Continue to Phalaborwa
One night

The mountain or Tzaneen stop

  • Choose one overnight base
  • Add one or two local experiences
  • Leave enough daylight for the next leg
  • Continue toward the Kruger gate
Two or more nights

The via71 road trip

  • Split mountain and Lowveld experiences
  • Stay in more than one landscape
  • Build food and outdoor stops into the route
  • Arrive at Kruger without rushing
Important: Kruger National Park gate operating times, fees, entry rules and road conditions can change. Verify operational information with SANParks before travel.

Plan around the gate

Don’t let a beautiful road trip make you late.

Build your route backwards from your intended Kruger arrival. Keep enough margin for stops, changing road conditions and the park’s current gate schedule.
