For many first-time international visitors, the itinerary is built around destinations they already recognise. Kruger National Park is one of those anchors. The appeal before Kruger is contrast. West of the Lowveld, the road rises into greener mountain landscapes and forested sections around Haenertsburg and Magoebaskloof before continuing through Tzaneen and east toward Phalaborwa.
That contrast gives the road-trip narrative a beginning, middle and destination: mountain country, a subtropical pause, the Lowveld and then Kruger.
